About Michelle Miles Michelle began her semi-prolific writing career long ago in junior high when she and her then-best friend wrote and illustrated their own Indiana Jones comic books. Star Trek fan-fiction quickly followed, as well as Star Wars fan-fic. Later, she dabbled in her own science fiction stories and some historical fiction (princesses, towers, and handsome princes!), and finally found writing hot contemporary was just her cup of tea.
Michelle is a member of Romance Writers of America. She resides in suburban Fort Worth with her cat and her precocious son. In her spare time, she enjoys watching hockey, reading, adding to her shoe collection and--of course!--drinking coffee.

An Interview with Michelle Miles
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio
HH: Michelle, thank you so much for talking with us. Your featured book is The Coffee Wars. I love this premise of two competing coffee shop owners. Where did you get the idea for this steamy tale?MM: Thanks for having me! Always a pleasure to be here. :) I was trying to come up with a short novella for the Christmas line for Cobblestone and couldn't come up with anything new. While at RWA Nationals last summer, my chapter-mates suggested I write one of my coffee house books and set it around Christmas. It was like the light bulb went on. As soon as I got back, I had about 4 weeks until the deadline. I got down to business immediately and decided David needed his own book -- he's the brother in NICE GIRLS DO. In that book, The Bitter End was in danger of closing its doors forever so I thought…what would up the competition for the little coffee house? I started writing and then in walked Lilly. A competition was born.
HH: What do you like best about David and why will he appeal to romance readers? MM: He was the long-suffering, quiet "good" brother in NICE GIRLS DO. He was the one who didn't get the girl, even though he really wanted Cara for himself. It turns out he's not so quiet and not so good after all. In fact, he has a bit of a bad streak in him like his brother, Mark. I think readers will like how he takes what he wants. Which is Lilly.
HH: What do you like best about Lilly and why do you think readers will relate to her? MM: She's a young, feisty go-getter. She's determined to be successful and be the best at what she does. She knows she's the up-and-coming entrepreneur of the year and wants to see The Bitter End put out of business with her better and more successful Java Perks. That is, until she meets Davis. Then everything changes. She likes to be in control (and what woman doesn't?) but when she realizes she can't compete with David, she's faced with some tough choices.
HH: Are you a regular at a coffee shop somewhere or did you have to research it? MM: I'm a regular Starbucks customer. In fact, they know me by name. I sort of took all the things I love about going there and added some other fun stuff I thought would be cool. The Bitter End has plush, leather furniture and a stage that hosts smooth jazz some nights and poetry readings others. It's a place where artists can hang out. As a writer, it's very appealing to me.
HH: What do you think today's reader is looking for in erotic romance and how does this story meet that need? MM: I think they're looking for an escape. A story to get lost in. For erotic romance, it's a way to fall in love again and have that super hot first-time sex with someone they're attracted to. ;)
HH: What else do you have in the works for lucky readers? MM: Currently I'm working on a time travel set in the Middle Ages at a jousting tournament. Once I'm finished with that, I have a space opera to finish and then I have an idea for a series featuring three brothers who are cowboys. Everyone loves cowboys, right?
HH: Michelle, why did you want to be a writer? Why do you still?
MM: I love being lost in the imagination, creating worlds, and telling stories. When I write, I can “see” the story unfolding in my head. Almost like I'm watching a movie and I hope readers can see that vision, too. I still want to be a writer for those very reasons. That and those pesky characters talking in my head have to get out somehow.
HH: If you weren't a writer, you'd be a...?
MM: Archeologist. I was fascinated with that stuff when I was growing up. But I'm not that book smart and I hate school, so that was out. LOL
HH: What's your favorite guilty pleasure? MM: Buying shoes and Coach bags.
HH: What is your biggest hope for 2011? MM: Success! I want to write more and produce more and hopefully I can make that happen. The year is barely a month old, but I'm trying make myself form new, better habits.
HH: Thank you!
