An Interview with Cheryl Dragon

HH: Cheryl, thank you so much for talking with us at TRS. Your featured book is Backing Brian and it's the sexy tale of a clothing shop owner in Texas totally attracted to his handsome bodyguard. Where did you get the idea for this sizzling tale?CD: Backing Brian is part of the Raider's Bodyguard Service Series. Brian was briefly introduced in Pushing Penny and readers loved him. He needed his own story and his Mr. Right. I had a lot of fun with these two gay men dealing with Texas, love, and their very different families. It's a lot of smoldering attraction and hot sex with a dash of danger. Light bdsm with a couple of switches who love to rope and ride...these two very intense characters and I'm thrilled to share them.
HH: What do you like best about Brian and why will readers relate to him? CD: Brian is the guy you could be best friends with. He knows who he is, what he wants, and doesn't let anyone bring him down. His family may not always understand him, but they are a close group that will support and love Brian no matter what...which produced a great man. If we could all have Brian's confidence, attitude, and openness -- I wish I had half of it some days. Plus he's very hot and rich. He's the one on the cover with all the rope;) Brian is into light bdsm play especially with his hot bodyguard, which makes him so fun and creative.
HH: What do you like about Jones and why might he be perfect for him? CD: Jones had a very different life. His family didn't tolerate his sexuality and he ran off to L.A. Coming back to Texas is very hard for him, but Jones is a dedicated bodyguard and his boss is Brian's brother-in-law. Both Brian and Jones love their work and don't walk away from a challenge. Jones is perfect for Brian because he truly appreciates the things Brian might take for granted...including how amazing Brian himself is.
Jones has never gotten involved with a client before but resisting the confident and sexy Brian is impossible. It starts out casual and Jones thinks he can walk away. He can't stay in Texas with all the demons of his past. He tries to reach out to his family but is rebuffed. Jones finds he likes Brian's crazy clan much better. The playful and tempting sex is another addiction. He's found the right man but can Jones change his entire life and build a future in the place he left behind?
HH: The m/m romance genre enjoys continued popularity. As a female author, what draws you to this genre? CD: Two men together is just hot! I'm a fan of Glee and the two guys there just had their first kiss and it's a huge topic of conversation. Erotic romance readers have know about this passion for a long time:) Men being romantic with each other, falling in love and letting down those tough exterior walls -- not for a woman but for each other is a whole new level of intensly sexy. Men being tender with a woman, kind to a child or a dog is nice but when they show that side to another man it's a dazzling sign of inner strength and vulnerability women don't get to see in the real world--at least not often. So we get to enjoy it in books. When the right guys show up for a story, I can't resist giving them a happily ever after. Brian and Jones really almost wrote themselves!
HH: Will there be future books featuring Raider's Bodyguard service? CD: There are two out now. Abducting Andrea (m/f light bdsm) and Pushing Penny (bbw light bdsm) are available now!

HH: What else do you have in the works? CD: Birthday Party Surprise comes out in April! Menage + erotic romance to soothe the heroine's pain of turning a year older. We should all get this sort of a birthday party. Jessica has been off and on with one man for years. But turning 35 makes her want to cut loose and have some fun. Four men, however, isn't something a girl can have just once. Especially when they are four bisexual men she loves and knows very well. They just have to figure out how to make this group love work in a small town.
HH: What do you enjoy most about the writing itself? CD: I get the high of a happily ever after again and again. It's like an addiction and I get to share it with others and feed their HEA needs. Making the characters work to fall in love, have great sex, and commit to the right person (people). Who doesn't love that feeling? And I get to write the characters that show up in my mind and do exactly what I want with them. It's a real romantic power trip.
HH: What advice would you give to aspiring writers today? CD: First, decide if you're writing for an audience or for yourself. A big part of the fun for me is making the readers happy, knowing what they want in a certain genre and giving them a good story with my personal spin has to be part of the plan. If you're writing for the readers, figure out what genre you do best and go for it. Trends change so finding a couple subgenres is good. But once you do your homework, jump in and write. There's a lot of distractions but if you don't write the books.... all the other stuff doesn't matter.
HH: What are you reading right now? CD: The Romantic Times schedule....I'm going to RT in Los Angeles in under two weeks! See you there;)
HH: Any fun plans for the summer? CD: Lori Foster's weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Another chance to hang with readers and give out some promo goodies. Road trip to Ohio... and lots lots lots more writing.
