Reviews for Deception
"The lyrical language in Deception is perfect for a romantic, historical story. The flowery phrases and expressions add to the ambiance in a very important way. They help to create a contrast between the world of Leander and Rupert and life as it was in the prim and proper 1890s , which makes their plight even more poignant. If you love historical romance with strong characters, angst, drama, passion, forgiveness and a happy ending, then you'll love Deception." - Lena Grey, Queer Magazine Online

An Interview with Lyndi Lamont
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio
HH: Lyndi, thank you for talking with us at TRS. Your featured book is Deception and is part of the Masquerade series at Amber Quill Press. How did you come to be part of the series?LL: Amber Quill's Editorial Director, Trace Edward Zaber, sent out a Call for Submissions for a series involving a masked ball. Along with the guidelines he posted a series of photos of Carnival-style costumes, and I couldn't resist the lure. I fell in love with the image on the cover, that gorgeous black and gold costume.
HH: Where did the idea for your story come from? LL: There's something about a masked ball that stirs an author's imagination, prompting us to ask: Who is behind the mask and what does he have to hide? Quite a lot, perhaps.
I'd been wanting to write a story set in the 1890's, and as I began to research the period, the characters started to take form.
HH: What can you tell us about Leander and why will readers relate to him? LL: Leander is young, only 23, with gold curls and blue eyes. He's a struggling artist who works nights waiting tables to keep body and soul together, but his poverty and estrangement from his family hasn't dimmed his spirits. (His father kicked him out after Leander was found in flagrante delicto with a handsome footman.) He's playful and open, ready to give his heart, if only he can meet the right man. The members of my critique group fell in love with him and I'm hoping readers will, too.
HH: What can you tell us about Rupert and why will readers love him? LL: Rupert is more complicated. He's older (35), sadder and wiser, or so he thinks. He's also not as ready as Leander to take chances. Rupert has more to lose: his lifelihood, his reputation, and the love of his family. He's already lost one love to pneumonia. He won't give his heart so easily this time. He needs to be shaken from his complacency, and Leander is just the man for the job!
HH: I love how you tied this story to the history of Oscar Wilde. What sort of research did you do for this story? LL: Aside from the usual internet resources and library books, I read The Secret Life of Oscar Wilde by Neil McKenna, a detailed biography of Oscar's affairs of the heart. The book was a great source of detail about the culture of the time. Also, I rented the movie Wilde starring Stephen Fry and Jude Law as Oscar and his friend Lord Alfred "Bosie" Douglas and found it helpful and inspiring. The more I learned about Oscar, the more I felt for him. He risked all for his love of Bosie, and in the process, lost his reputation, his livlihood, his freedom, his health, and ultimately, his family,
HH: With the popularity of M/M genre, how did you go about making this story stand out? LL: Since the majority of M/M books seem to be contemporary, setting Deception in the past helps to make it different. The covers for the Masquerade series are also somewhat unique, and quite beautiful, I think.
HH: What else do you have in the works? LL: Right now I'm working on a M/F erotic romance involving a dragon shifter for an upcoming Amber Heat pax. After that, I'd like to write two more M/M stories in my Alliance science fiction series. One of these days I have to supply happy endings for Tai and Behrin and Shayan and Rulik!
HH: How do you personally view the future of ebooks? LL: I think ebooks will continue to grow in popularity, though I don't think they'll make print books completely obsolete, at least not any time soon. I've been reading ebooks for over ten years now, and I've long felt that the hangup all along was the hardware, as reading on a computer isn't much fun. The advent of the e-ink readers and the ubiquity of the smart phone really made a difference, and now that the price of readers is going down, I think more people will give it a try. Tablets are another good development. I love my Kindle and my iPad equally, if for different reasons. :)
HH: What's your favorite way to interact with readers? LL: I don't get to conferences and conventions much any more, so I rarely get to readers face to face. But I enjoy blogging and online chats.
HH: Any conference or appearance plans this fall? LL: None this year, though I will probably attend the RWA National Conference next year as it is going to be in Anaheim, California, practically in my backyard.
HH: Thank you!
