An Interview with Viki Lyn
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio

HH: Viki, thank you so much for talking with us. Your featured book is Fighting Chance and is the story of a vampire, a slayer and a chance for mortality. Where did you get the idea for this unique story?

VL: This is a sequel that follows Last Chance, the book that introduced Kresnik slayer Stu Hamilton and scientist Aric Christian. In my previous book, I introduced the serum that can turn vampires back into humans. Corbin Hamilton (a Kresnik and Stu Hamilton's brother) gets roped into rehabilitating Johan. Well, as the story progresses, Johan is changing but Corbin isn't sure he's comfortable with those changes!

HH: What do you like about Johan and why will readers relate to him?

VL: Johan is over three hundred years old. He's from a wealthy aristocratic family from Austria. Before he was turned, he'd been a happy, carefree man; a man who enjoyed his life and lover; a man who understood the importance of love. Now he craves for this kind of love again. He believes in Corbin, and will stand by his side. I believe readers will relate to his angst of loving someone who can't return his feelings. His yearning for human touch will break your heart. He can be cheeky, sexy and a tease, but in a fight, he's ferocious and will fight to the death if it will save the person he loves.

HH: What do you think of his bodyguard and why will readers love him?

VL: Corbin Hamilton is a vampire slayer, a Kresnik of incredible strength. He lives to kill vampires, so what happens when he begins to fall in love with one? His stubbornness sets in, he refuses to acknowledge his feelings, and he fights back the only way he knows how, by being cold. Yet as he gets to know Johan his beliefs begin to unravel. Who he is, what he is, what does he want? I'm sure many of my readers have experienced such a profound change in perception at one time or the other. Corbin can be cold, but inside he's burning with passion. When he falls, he falls hard.

HH: As an author in a competitive market, how do you make a paranormal story stand out?

VL: I try to take the canon and give it a twist. There are stories about Kresniks, and I've taken the myth and expanded on it. The anti-vampire serum is one twist in the vampire canon – and how Johan is changing is another twist. In Fighting Chance, there is a moral dilemma for Corbin. Can he take part in turning vampires back to humans, because it comes too close to acting like a vampire – turning humans into one of their kind?

HH: What else do you have in the works?

VL: Oh my, I've been on a roll lately! My last book came out in October so it's been a while. It isn't that I haven't been writing, but I hadn't completed my WIPS until recently. I turned in the sequel to The Tiger Within to my editor in May. The Hunter Within is a continuation of John Hunter and Antoine Fortescue's love story. Of course, their love stands on unstable ground! =) In THW -– Jack has to decide if he wants to turn his back on Antoine, the Sentinel and go back to his wife and the life he led before his change.

I'm very excited about a vampire M/M romance I co-wrote with Vina Grey that will be published by Liquid Silver. For The Bite of It –- our vampire Vincent owns a cupcake bakery!

I completed a third book which is part of my Woodland Village series published by Aspen Mountain Press. This is a contemporary love story featuring John Kramer - Ryan Adam's CFO and VP of Fantasy Art. He had a cameo appearance in Ryan's Harbor.

HH: With the rising popularity of ebook readers and devices like the iPad, what changes do you see coming in the romance genre?

VL: I think the ebook craze is going to continue and get crazier. I believe there will be more authors who want to take control of their own destiny and self-publish. Marketing will be a key for authors to be heard above the noise of the Internet. Recently I published a free read on Smashwords and was amazed at the number of hits I'd received without doing one bit of advertising.

The downside of ebook publishing is marketing takes time away from writing. That's the trade off to having a successful ebook career. The cool thing is that there is no limit to what can be published – and with ebooks, the reader has a wide selection of genres in which to choose. Nowadays, there are a zillion cross genres that it's hard to keep up with the trends.

HH: As a romance reader, what sort of stories do you personally prefer?

VL: I prefer reading m/m contemporary romances and mysteries.

HH: Tell us about the best fan mail (email) you've ever gotten.

VL: All my fan mail is the best! I love each and every one of my fan letters, because it's really special when a reader takes time out of their life to email me. I received an email from a reader who had read Out of Bounds and wrote: "excellent love story, beautifully written... it was poignantly deep." I was moved by this email because this is a 'coming out' story and I wanted to do justice to the ordeal so many GLBT people go through when coming out to their family and friends.

HH: What are your favorite hobbies/activities these days?

VL: My friends and family are shocked at this, but I love to play golf! I never was into playing sports. I started playing golf last year when my husband took it up, and talked me into going to the driving range. He's just as surprised as my friends that I really took to it. I'm competitive enough to want to improve *g*...

HH: Any vacation or appearance plans this summer?

VL: This summer I plan to visit my family in California and spend a few days in Santa Cruz. But my ‘big' trip is in September. I'm traveling to Eastern Europe on a river cruise –- can't wait! We fly into Budapest and board our boat which sails the Danube, and then we'll end our trip with a week in Prague (which is a setting in Fighting Chance!). I plan to take lots of pics and write down my impressions of the area. If I write a third "Chance" book -– I'll set the story in that area again.

Thank you for having me!
