Ellie Briotti is the quiet, suburban, Chicago housewife we meet in the beginning of this book yelling at God in the middle of a thunderstorm. Basically, she is a forty year-old woman, mother of an eleven year old boy and she just discovered her husband of twenty years was having an affair with a young 'looking' girl. Eventually, said young girl is found dead in her father-in-law's condo and Ellie is the prime suspect for murder. Oy.

Okay, this is a murder/mystery and I bought it because it sounded interesting and entertaining, which it is. The first thirty percent of the book (while having parts I laughed at) had all the really negative things in it about Ellie's life as an Irish-Catholic who married a (from Italy) Italian. If I had started this a few weeks ago when I didn't have such personal stress I would have gotten through it faster than I did. Because of my personal stress, I couldn't quite deal well with Ellie's. Knowing this, I took longer than necessary to read it. Now that I've shared that, this is a good book. Ms. De Vita created characters that were very descriptive and fun. I especially liked Ellie's best friend Rina, all the Italians in Little Italy, as well as the Irish-Catholic nuns (who rocked).

I barely got through the sections with Candy, the twenty two year-old mistress. She was so horrible I really wanted to kill her! The sections with Nicky, Ellie's husband, with his father added into it all were pretty much appalling. Ms. De Vita gave us quite the roller-coaster ride trying to discover who killed Candy. I am pleased to say it was not the butler who did it. I loved Ellie's path from house-wife to finding a new career, and Rina's path from successful career woman to mother. I did find the end to be a bit contrived, but I did enjoy this book!
