This is Book Two of the Jewel Bonds Series By Megan Derr. You don’t HAVE to have read the first one, but since it is a fantasy world Ms. Derr created I found it to be helpful. This is a short story about Selsor, a young man who had really wanted to be a trained mage. The problem was, when he went to get training, the other mages tried to find out what magic he would be good at... it turned out to be almost none. Poor Selsor not only thought he was a failure, he was completely bullied to the point they (and he) thought he had killed someone in anger. He was thrown out of the school and the city and the jewels on his hands were blackened. (The jewels indicate magical ability, and then the colors of said jewels indicate more.)

Three years after being thrown out, Selsor is scrubbing floors in an inn when six soldiers come in. The town has been rained on for what seems like forever and not only have mages tried to at least get it under control but they were almost out of luck. Because Selsor’s jewels were blackened, he doesn’t really have any powers he used to, he can only slightly feel that the rain is caused by magic. One of the six soldiers, Jenohn, wakes him in the middle of the night and asks for his help. He then re-activates Selsor’s jewels and the two begin their adventure.

For a short story, Ms. Derr sure packs a punch! There is some mystery as to the rain and weather, as well as the fact that Jenohn seems to totally know and be into Selsor. I very much liked Jenohn and how full of himself yet protective of his team he was. I felt terribly for Selsor in the first chapter or two, started to really dig Jenohn and by the end I was cheering them on! This is a captivating read! As with all of Ms. Derr’s short stories, I just wish this one was a little longer!
