This is the first book in a four part series that follows the four Elden heirs. Each story is written by a different author. This is Nicolai's story. It is a fast-paced ride through a magical realm complete with vampires, ogres, witches and other creatures straight from a fantasy world. Jane and Nicolai are in a lot of pain, both physical and emotional. Jane is a strong heroine and easy to like. Nicolai takes more time to warm up to. He has many issues and remains annoying for quite awhile. It is gratifying to watch him change. Their relationship is slow to build but then explodes. The sex is beyond spicy and reflects their fierceness as a couple. There is nonstop action with plenty of surprises and twists. The plot moves fast and does become a bit confusing but I caught up quickly. There is moderately graphic violence but it really does fit the story. With so many vampire stories out there, its nice to see something fresh and new. Ms. Showalter's world is exciting, inventive, dangerous and, of course, magical. Like an old-fashioned fairytale filled with heroes, monsters and star-crossed lovers(with addition of some really hot sex), this story delivers a thrilling and satisfying read. A wonderful way to spend a lazy afternoon. I can't wait to see what the next installment holds for Nicolai's sister Breena.
