| Criminal attorney Jessica is anxious to get away from a troubling case and a would-be suitor and she and her friend Amber fly to Cancun. They encounter three American tourists who agree to accompany them on a trip to Chichén Itzá. While at the ancient ruins, three men abduct Jessica, Jack, an older man, and two young women. While in a remote shack in the jungle, they learn the reason for their abduction is to force the Americans to release a prisoner who is one of their compatriots. The kidnappers kill one of the young women and the older man, but Jack, Jessica and the remaining prisoner, Megan, manage to escape into the jungle. When the evil men learn Jessica is the daughter of a powerful senator, the stakes become much higher. During a grueling flight, fraught with dangers and terror, the three learn each other's secrets and form a lasting bond.
This spine-tingling story kept me enraptured until the very end. The only reason I didn't read it in one sitting was that it was 3:00 a.m. I picked it up again the next morning and finished it, wishing it would go on and on. The author did a wonderful job of creating the characters. Jessica is a warm, caring individual who thinks of others first, even though she has trust issues. Jack, who has a secret he rarely talks about, is a delightful character, protective, smart, and much more caring than appears on the surface. Megan, who proves to be a great help during their trek through the jungle, is a person with an indomitable will, going on even when she becomes ill. The three tell their stories and become very close, working together in all ways, even when facing danger and almost certain death. The author has done a magnificent job of describing the terrain, the various cabins they are in, as well as the characters themselves. The love between Jack and Jessica grows gradually, until, at the end they realize how much they care for one another. The final battle between the good guys and the bad is exciting, the edge-of-your-seat kind of thriller. I will most certainly look for other books by this author.
