| Jane Porter used to be the girlfriend of a rising pop star, until she caught him in their bed with a nineteen year-old. Not only was she hurt and humiliated, the girl went to the gossip magazines and publicly told the story, making it worse for Jane. She leaves her town in Northern England and goes to London to try to escape the public and move on with her life. She crashes at her friend Polly's flat and gets a job in a patent law firm. This is where she meets our hero, Marsh Winfield.
The office she works in is filled with people who do what people in offices do; work, gossip and be bitchy towards other people. Ms. Baxter has certainly captured the office spirit for us. She has also given us a very clever and amusing story. Jane and Marsh have really incredible chemistry, but they try to hide it from the office for a variety of reasons. Jane is still trying to hide who she is (as far as the public thinks anyway). Marsh is trying to get a promotion and two men in the office have a bet as to whether or not one of them will sleep with her in the next month. Those two are Eric (only slightly a sleazebag) and Keith (a complete and utter sleazebag). This is a good book. There were a few typographical, formatting issues that were distracting... and I was completely confused when Marsh's sister keeps asking him for money to get her car MOT'd... Since I don't live in England and had no idea what that meant (I went to my Facebook friends, then to Wikipedia to find out). Jane was a wonderful girl (even if Polly and I wanted to slap some sense into her) and Marsh was just (and I'm smiling as I type this) an incredible hunk! Parts of the story were truly gripping and many parts were just humorous and plain sweet. This is such a refreshing and fun book! I am so looking forward to reading more from Ms. Baxter!
