Adie Perrin is a war hero in a hostile, occupied world. She's also only a shell of her former self, scarred both inside and out from torture at the hands of the enemy. The planet's former ruling family appears to be nothing more than a figurehead for the invaders. But appearances can be deceiving and when Prince Zin appears before Adie and insists she marry him, Adie accepts the mission. Zin refuses to marry a Petulo princess and give the enemy anymore claim to his planet. He will marry a hero of the people and move forward with his plans. Adie's trust is difficult to win and Zin harbors a horrifying secret. Adie has accepted that her death is near but can she find a way to live as Zin works his way into heart and the revolution forges ahead. When traitors and betrayal lurk at every turn, who to trust becomes the only question.

Set against the backdrop of a conquered world, a tentative and fragile relationship is forged between two people ravaged by the war. Adie is a shattered, almost broken woman who survives only because of her inner strength. Prince Zin is steeped in regret and guilt. He carries a secret connection to Adie even before their marriage. It's that connection that's at the heart of their relationship. Adie's torture becomes Zin's. I think this works well in the story and is the reason the story feels real. They are right together and they are whole. The author has created quite a detailed and complex world. There's intrigue and suspense at almost every turn of the page. It's hard to put down because you keep thinking that truth will be revealed at any moment. It's one surprise after another and I found myself very caught up in all the cloak and dagger stuff. This book is from the Ellora's Cave Blush imprint and the sexual encounters are a bit toned down but I would caution that torture(both alluded to and actual) plays a significant role in this story. It may not suitable for everyone. I do, however, recommend this action-filled romance to sci-fi fans. It's not just an enjoyable sci-fi romance, it's a well crafted sci-fi story. There really is a difference.
