Avery and her twin brother, Cale, have always had a special bond. But when Cale is severely injured in Afghanistan, that bond is severed and she latches on to the only other presence around, Ridge. Ridge has been Cale’s best friend for the last ten years and while overseas, he makes a promise to look out for Avery if anything happens to Cale. Ridge has been in love with Avery for the last ten years, but feels she deserves someone better. Now with Cale gone and someone out to hurt Avery, Ridge has to come to grips with what he went through in Afghanistan and his new bond with Avery in order to protect her and give her what she needs. Can Ridge overcome his guilt in time to save the woman he loves? Or will he be too late?

Avery and Ridge both have some very deep insecurity about themselves when it comes to each other. Avery feels that she isn’t glamorous or sophisticated enough to hold Ridge’s interest and Ridge thinks Avery deserves someone better than a grunt that is broken. While dealing with the flashbacks and the panic attacks, Ridge tries to protect Avery from the person who is stalking her and the police are trying to find out why she is being stalked. When the stalker makes his move, it is up to Ridge to become the man Avery needs in order to rescue her from a madman.

Overall, this was an enthralling tale of two people trying to move on after a terrible loss. Throughout the story I couldn’t decide who was the most stubborn because they were blowing up at each other and each one was taking everything that was going on and blowing it out of proportion. I couldn’t decide who needed to be hit upside the head to knock some sense into them to get them to wake up and see what the other was feeling before they jumped to conclusions that were way off base. I enjoyed this story more than most stories lately and I cannot wait to read more from this author.
