Juliet is thinking all her dreams are over. She’s the oldest daughter of a large family in Northumberland. She was presented to society but was never married. Her mother arranges a possible marriage to a local lawyer Mr. Lambert. Since her trip to London, she has been exchanging letters with Lord Vane, a handsome Marquess. He isn’t just titled and wealthy, he is also kind of shy. He had been writing to Juliet in hopes of possibly convincing his mother, Duchess of Wallace, to possibly approve of his marrying Juliet. When Juliet writes telling him that she will be engaged soon and they will have to terminate their correspondence he leaves immediately for Northumberland hoping he is not too late. Vane arrives at her home with some friends and uses his name (without his title) and eventually gets semi-snowed in. He also meets Mr. Lambert and really does not like him. Except for her mother, no one in Juliet’s family likes him either. Ms. Satow has written a very sweet, romantic story. I like the fact that Juliet keeps her calm, is always respectful and while disliking Mr. Lambert she never treats him with any disrespect. She is also very much ‘in like’ with Lord Vane. Okay, much more than liking him, she is falling in love with him and is VERY uncomfortable with Mr. Lambert. She still tries to be nice to him while being embarrassed by her mother’s hostility towards Vane. Of course, Lord Vane was introduced as Mr. Dennis Moorecomb, so Juliet’s mother has no idea she is mistreating a peer of the realm. Lord Vane is a very likeable man, he’s not completely obsessed with his title, wealth or anything having to do with society. He is so kind to Juliet’s sisters and the rest of the family. I thought his somewhat awkward moments at the house were actually cute. Ellora's Cave says very specifically that this is a sweet romance – and you know what? It IS a sweet romance! I thought Juliet and Dennis were so, so wonderful together! Now I’m hunting for more of Ms. Satow’s work!
